Shipboard Dockworker Crushed By Collapsed Mobile Harbor Crane (HCM City, VN ~ 24 November 2015)

Reports coming to Blueoceana Company indicate that a large mobile harbor crane collapsed at its base while engaged in cargo operations at the afterend of  the C/V FORTUNE NAVIGATOR at Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam last night.

The attached news article provides some basic facts, some of which we’re a bit skeptical of.

However, we understand through independent means that several longshore workers were trapped on deck within the rubble, and also that one of them had died as a result of crushing injuries. From friends on the ground there, we also understand that the crane was likely overloaded.

We note that mobile harbor cranes such as these slew on a bull ring at their base. The superstructure turns on circular bearings that require close examination and lubrication at manufacturer-designated intervals. If that doesn’t occur, devastating collapses can and do happen.
