Docking Container Ship Knocks Down Three Ship To Shore Container Cranes. [Kocaeli Port, Turkey – 16 March 2024]

Earlier today, the 14,000 TEU C/V YM WITNESS allided with three (3) ship-to-shore container handling gantry cranes at the Sea of Marmara port of Kocaeli (about 60 miles South West of Istanbul), knocking them down in a chain reaction type of event.

One crane operator is said to have been seriously injured.

While the newness of this allision is leaving us wondering about cause, we understand that the relevant authorities are actively investigating all aspects of this accident. Should Blueoceana Company come upon further information, it will appear here as an UPDATE.

UPDATE – 17 March 2024: News reaching us (See link immediately below) indicates terminal operator Evyapport’s damage loss estimate of U.S. $40,000,000 in the aftermath of yesterday’s accident. The updated Kocaeli TV media account also alleges that there were no injuries, in a statement which contradicts news accounts which represent that one crane operator was severely injured (See The Maritime Executive media account, also below).

Information which we believe to be accurate, provides that Evyapport entered into a partnership with DP World in 2023 in the operation of this terminal and an adjacent one.
