Longshore Worker Fatally Injured in Forklift Related Accident [San Diego, California ~ 03 January 2018]

Yesterday afternoon, a longshore worker was killed in a workplace accident that took place at the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal at the Port of San Diego, California.

While the identity of the worker is as yet unknown at this point in time, we expect that further information will disclose that identity and also provide the facts associated with this incident. Presently, what we do know is that it was a forklift-related event.

From our own knowledge, we appreciate that the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal is owned by the Port of San Diego and is a multi-user facility leased or operated by several ocean carriers and stevedores such as Dole, Ports America, SSA and MetroPorts.

For now, we can simply post the sole news media account that alerted us… as well as publicly available information relative to the Port of San Diego facility.

Supplemental information will be posted here once received.

UPDATE: 05 December 2018/5:00 PM:

Conflicting reports (all of which are as-yet unconfirmed) would have us understand that Mr. Phillip Andrew Vargas, a member of ILWU Local Union 29 (see photo below), was operating an industrial truck (one report indicates that it was a “heavy capacity” forklift; the other that it was a 15,000 lb forklift) when, during such operation, the machine allided with a structural pillar within the 10th Avenue Marine Terminal.

Taken together, the reports then would hold that one or both of the machine’s forks came away from the lifting carriage, striking Mr. Vargas in the head. Thereafter, he was ejected from the operator’s seat and thrown to grade level. Both reports then hold that the machine rolled over and atop Mr. Vargas. Both reports anecdotally note that Mr. Vargas had been the ILWU-PMA forklift trainer for the San Diego port area, and that he leaves behind him an extremely loving family whose grief is pronounced. We grieve with them.

We restate that the foregoing originates from reliable, but unconfirmed, sources. Those with greater, more authoritative and direct knowledge have not, as yet, deemed it appropriate to share their knowledge. When (and if) they do, Blueoceana Company will revise and amend the narrative above, as necessary.
