PSA Crane Mechanic Caught Up In Container Crane’s Hoist Drum [Singapore – 20 September 2017]

While media coverage thus far tends to leave one guessing, we do know that an as yet unnamed crane maintenance worker lost his life yesterday morning when caught up in the bight of a revolving hoist or trolley drum atop a container gantry crane at Singapore’s Keppel Terminal.

Having had the grim experience of investigating similar accidents in the past, I can only imagine the type of carnage that took place. It’s truly horrifying…..

If/when we come across further information, this post will be supplemented.

Update: 21 September 7:20 PM EST –  Information coming to Blueoceana Company reveals that the fatally injured worker (as yet still unnamed) was standing next to one of the crane’s wire rope drums while in the process of “… carrying out checks on a gearbox.”  Conjecture leads us to believe that a hoist drum was activated and that the worker was brought into the revolving drum by its large diameter wire rope.
