1 Manager Killed; 1 Longshoreman Injured in Separate Accidents [Port Everglades, FL ~ 10 October 2016]

In a particularly bad day at Port Everglades (which also included a multi-railcar derailment incident with no injuries), a manager in the employ of Sun Terminals [King Ocean] suffered fatal injuries today when a golf cart she was operating collided with a yard tractor. The yard tractor was being driven by an operator in the employ of Crowley Maritime Services, who had called at the King Ocean leasehold operated, in part, by Sun Terminals, as part of a container transshipment activity.

The collision, we understand, resulted in the Sun Terminals manager being ejected from the golf cart and subsequently being struck by the yard tractor. We have no further facts at this time, apart from those set out within the linked media accounts.

In a separate incident occurring earlier that morning, a longshore worker operating a yard tractor struck what appears to be a stationary (landed in its holder) over-height cargo spreader attachment. Our understanding, is that the allision resulted in the longshore worker’s entire rig (tractor, bomb cart & 2 twenty foot containers) tipping over. There was extensive damage to the yard tractor’s cab (see attached photographs). The longshore worker was taken to hospital and fairly quickly released with minor injuries. We understand he was wearing his seat belt, and believe that his injuries may have very well been life-threatening had he not been doing so.
